Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose

Recycling and gardening go hand in hand. There are tons of "stuff" being thrown away each and every day. Before you throw something away, check to see if there is a use for it that you haven't thought of. Let everyone know. If you don't want to become a packrat, then list your item(s) on Freecycle. How do you recycle, reuse, or repurpose things? Let us know.

Who, what, where is MEcG (Mother Earth's Community Garden)?

"What we are doing with MECG is both very valuable and important for each of us as individuals, for our families, our neighborhoods, and our city. It is not only in our best interests but we are also obligated to bring this understanding to others. We are obligated because we know."............................................ by Monte Smith 2009
About MECG
We are located in downtown Fort Smith, Arkansas at the corner of North 9th and D Streets. MEcG is a non-profit project and is operated by generous volunteers.

Our garden site is made possible by the generosity of Mohammed Raache, owner of Bella Italia Restaurant(407 N. 8th Street) and MoMo's Gourmet Foods & Bistro (4300 Rogers Ave.).

MEcG consists of 2 main areas: our social garden and our growing garden.

Our growing garden has 45 vegetable beds of various sizes (including 3 that are wheelchair accessible), an herb bed and 5 flower beds. Our gardeners are encouraged to add an artistic touch to their beds. We have several trellis designs, handmade stepping stones, and several garden signs. Our flower beds and the herb bed are common areas for all in the community to enjoy.

Now for the social garden. This is indeed unique to MEcG. We show movies on a large outdoor screen just like the old drive-ins, only ours is a walk-in. Some of our local artists have shown their pieces at different events we have had. We even have poetry readings along with showcasing our local musicians. We had a Halloween party complete with costumes this past year. We are hoping to make this an annual event. And, it is nothing for us to end a long day of hard work with a cookout on the grill and a relaxing talk around our fire-pit.

So, if this sounds like fun to you and you're looking to be outdoors, come on down and play in the dirt with us. See you in the garden......................Garden Mama

This is really cool. Pictures and music go together!!! I think that you have outdone yourself. So, does this mean you are going to do a slideshow for the Lawn & Garden Show? If I go to that website, will it show me how to make these?

I'm sure most of you know this, but I'm putting it out there. Coffee grounds, egg shells and newspaper make excellent compost. Turn it daily and keep it moist. When it stops smelling like coffee and starts smelling like dirt, it's ready to use!
