Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose

Recycling and gardening go hand in hand. There are tons of "stuff" being thrown away each and every day. Before you throw something away, check to see if there is a use for it that you haven't thought of. Let everyone know. If you don't want to become a packrat, then list your item(s) on Freecycle. How do you recycle, reuse, or repurpose things? Let us know.

Who, what, where is MEcG (Mother Earth's Community Garden)?

"What we are doing with MECG is both very valuable and important for each of us as individuals, for our families, our neighborhoods, and our city. It is not only in our best interests but we are also obligated to bring this understanding to others. We are obligated because we know."............................................ by Monte Smith 2009
About MECG
We are located in downtown Fort Smith, Arkansas at the corner of North 9th and D Streets. MEcG is a non-profit project and is operated by generous volunteers.

Our garden site is made possible by the generosity of Mohammed Raache, owner of Bella Italia Restaurant(407 N. 8th Street) and MoMo's Gourmet Foods & Bistro (4300 Rogers Ave.).

MEcG consists of 2 main areas: our social garden and our growing garden.

Our growing garden has 45 vegetable beds of various sizes (including 3 that are wheelchair accessible), an herb bed and 5 flower beds. Our gardeners are encouraged to add an artistic touch to their beds. We have several trellis designs, handmade stepping stones, and several garden signs. Our flower beds and the herb bed are common areas for all in the community to enjoy.

Now for the social garden. This is indeed unique to MEcG. We show movies on a large outdoor screen just like the old drive-ins, only ours is a walk-in. Some of our local artists have shown their pieces at different events we have had. We even have poetry readings along with showcasing our local musicians. We had a Halloween party complete with costumes this past year. We are hoping to make this an annual event. And, it is nothing for us to end a long day of hard work with a cookout on the grill and a relaxing talk around our fire-pit.

So, if this sounds like fun to you and you're looking to be outdoors, come on down and play in the dirt with us. See you in the garden......................Garden Mama

The last slide is the best. The quilt effect of each circle pieced together. That was neat. Now I'm thinking that MEcG needs her own crop circle (or at least, a rock circle). These are incredible...............

Garden Memory Boards

Starting a new art project in the garden. I will place painted boards around the garden. When you come to visit, stop by one of them and leave us a note, a poem, a signature, maybe a drawing. Give us something to remember your visit with us.

We are having the most wonderful and informative videos being uploaded by some of our members. Please check them out and tell the members how much you appreciate what they are doing. The more we study, the more we learn. The more we learn, the better off we will be.
